FUNKE AKINDELE COVERS ISSUE 7 OF Y! MAGAZINE.

It’s an edgy and sexy Funke Akindele on the cover of the influential pop
culture brand Y! Magazine. The actress holds centre stage for the
magazine’s 7th edition as it profiles the most exciting ideas across
Nigeria — in technology, business, education, fashion, development,
entertainment, the media, governance and more.

“Funke Akindele is a public face and name who best exemplifies the trend
of pushing the envelope and staying at the cutting edge,” says Adebola
Williams, who is managing editor for the magazine. “Where Nora Ephron
meets Tyler Perry, she has several created iconic pop culture characters
using indigenous language. Her movies are continuously at the cutting edge
and she has set upon raising standards in a way that is inspiring to a new
generation of filmmakers and professionals across sectors.

“This edition is very dear to our hearts. We went around the country to
look for the best ideas, the brightest innovations, the most cutting edge
technology – young Nigerians who are doing amazing work across sectors and
setting a new standard for Nigeria’s future.

There’s a feature on the exciting Co-Creation Hub, an arena that pools
talent, ideas and projects that are redefining Nigeria’s technology space;
the Innovation Factory which is changing the way we see New Media in
Nigeria; and Student Circle which is revolutionising the way students
across the country access knowledge, two young people who have found a
solution to Nigeria’s power challenge and two deal web sites that are
changing the way we buy and sell.

There is also an interview with Idris Ayo Bello, an ideas factory who is
responsible for Wennovation, Libraries Across Africa, AfyaZima, and The
Next Cool Idea, a conversation with the three young men who run the
path-finding Jobberman.com as well as an interview with the two young men
behind the influential music website NotJustOk.com.

The magazine also travels the country and discovers that the governments
of Rivers, Akwa-Ibom and Anambra are harnessing their young citizens and
grooming them for global competitiveness.

Y! also interviews 12 young Nigerians aged 21 and below, and christens
them  ‘The New New Establishment’. They are already driving Nigeria’s
future and include designer Adebayo Oke-Lawal, blogger SheiFunmi, Bookneto
founder Iyinoluwa Aboyeji and Sokoto-based Ahmed Mukoshy who created the
Yarnable website.

All of this is capped off with a delicious mishmash of pop culture
highlights — including  the ‘Signorina Vintage’ style shoot, Terrence
Sambo exploring colonial architecture in Lagos, a feature story profiling
the rise of the glossy magazine, interviews with Banky W, Kelly Hansome,
Beat FM’s Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi, Soundcity’s Olamide Adedeji, Tinsel’s
Gbenro Ajibade, and reviews of music, movies, radio, television, stage
restaurants, gadgets and books from across the country.

“This is not the usual fare that you’d find in magazines – we have gone
the extra mile to find a bouquet of the most impressive ideas from young
Nigerians, who are now able to compete in a global economy. These are the
guys who really own the future; these are the guys we should be
celebrating. We’re extremely proud of what our team of editors has
presented to our readers this issue – it’s a gift!”

NIGERIA ROCKS! NIGERIAN IDOL RECORDS BRILLIANT PERFORMANCES AS TOP 5 SING CONTEMPORARY NIGERIAN HITS

Nigerian Idol celebrated its best show yet last weekend as its final 5
contestants amazed the audience, judges and viewers with Nigerian hits.
The guest judge for the night was a big surprise as Afro-juju legend Sir.
Shina Peters joined Jeffrey Daniel, Yinka Davies and Charly Boy on the
table. Earlier in the week, Linda Giami exited the show after receiving
the least number of votes.

Etisalat continues to support Nigeria’s immensely talented youth
especially in music. Nigerian Idol represents the aspiration of teeming
young Nigerians who desire to become the next big thing in music. Nigerian
Idol represents the biggest music platform for young Nigerians just as
Etisalat represents the biggest communication platform for young
Nigerians.

Kicking off the show with vigor, Shina Peters performed an exciting medley
of his biggest hits, preparing the audience for the spectacular
performances to follow.

Mercy Chinwo opened the stage with an electrifying rendition of Midnight
Crew's Igwe. Honey on the other hand, finally got a chance to perform with
his guitar as he serenaded the ladies with Tuface's African Queen. Stephen
Onochie better known as the lover boy performed Djnee's Ego in yet another
heart-warming performance that wowed the crowd. Najite was in her element
as her strong vocals complemented her performance of Paul I.K. Dairo's' Mo
So Rire'. However, It was Joe Blue's performance that brought the house
down; ditching his signature pose, he stood on the edges of a huge
traditional drum and delivered a dramatically charged version of
Infinity's Olorioko. The second time out, Honey appeared first with a
performance of Dbanj's 'Fall in Love' which was all his own. Joe Blue,
clearly a crowd favorite, had another go at giving his best to the
audience. Singing Flavour's 'oyi', the audience replied him with hoops and
cheers.  Najite is one of two divas left on the Nigerian Idol stage. Her
second performance of the night was Omawunmi's 'If you ask me', with which
she carried the crowd on a sing along.

Stephen rendered the timeless Nico Mbarga hit; 'Sweet Mother' earning him
a hug from his mother. For the second week running, Mercy Chinwo appeared
to have money on her mind. This time it was P-Square's Chop my money,
which the petite songbird transformed into ' I go chop your money.'
Mercy's song as usual brought the crowd alive in yet another exhilarating
performance that crowned the night.

According to www.nigerianidol.com, another eviction would take place this
weekend when the contestants with the highest votes inch closer towards
the title of Nigerian Idol and a prize haul valued at $100, 000. The next
Idol joins a bevy of internationally acclaimed idol alumni that include
Fantasia, Timi Dakolo and Yeka Onka.

Nigerian Idol is proudly brought to you by Etisalat in association with
Pepsi and Sony. It is supported by Air Nigeria, Kentucky Fried Chicken and
Megalectrics (owners of Beat FM, Classic FM and Naija FM)

OPINION: HOW TO BECOME A NIGERIAN "ACTIVIST"

fist
You stare at the Nigerian on CNN; at his gleaming forehead. He is taking his time answering questions about Nigeria in an accent that is improved for export. After his name comes the title, ‘Activist’.

This man has gone places with this title. You are not quite sure what this guy does, but you like the fame. There is NGO money involved for all the noise and ah, he travels. He goes everywhere. Places you dream of, London, Vienna, New York.

Ok. Calm down. I am here for you. You can be just like him. Just listen closely and you will very soon be acclaimed as one of Nigeria’s foremost activists.

Find something to be angry about; nothing special, nothing revolutionary. Something easy you can handle; like fuel prices, corruption or electricity. Finding the right thing to be angry about can be the key to success.

Many people in this business have gotten international interviews for organising town hall meetings with projector slides and statistics. Call it anything. Fuel-up Nigeria. Road-up Naija. De-corrupt Nigeria. Whatever. In fact don’t call it anything. Just be angry about something.

Be angry at the right time and in front of the right camera. Foreigners won’t give you cash or attention if they can’t access some tangible evidence of your work. Have a friend follow you around with a camcorder which will eventually be used to make that CD or DVD which will sell you to the clueless international media for whom Nigeria is a just a country with two regions that hate each other.

An activist doesn’t need to do anything in particular. So, avoid projects that will make you work as hard as Kenya’s Wangari Maathai whose Green Belt movement has planted 10 million trees. That is the real deal and it takes decades to get any recognition that way. So no Wangari moves, God bless her soul.

Let’s say you choose ‘Road-up Naija’. You see, you don’t have to build roads; that’s the business of government. You don’t even have to organise communities to pave their own roads with mud and stones to show the government how it’s done. Not like that other Kenyan, Evans Wandongo, who, instead of holding ‘Light-up Kenya’ town hall meetings in the heart of pretty Nairobi, made nearly 10,000 solar powered lanterns for the good people of rural Kenya. The man thinks he knows too much eh?

For our ‘Road-up Naija’ project, we will do press conferences, write scathing articles, and rent a projector for our town hall meetings in pretty Abuja and posh Lagos. Places like Kano, Kaduna, Ebonyi, and Akwa-Ibom are too dangerous.

Now to be a successful activist, social media is a prerequisite. Twitter and Facebook. Twitter especially. You must spend a lot of time tweeting angry thoughts and statistics. You must say to the government, ‘I am watching’.

Have the right people following you on Twitter, those with many followers who will be awed by your intelligent anger given in 140 character instalments, so awed that they can’t help retweeting. I’d choose someone like popular gossip blogger Linda Ikeji. Just make sure she retweets you. Gbam. Slowly you will gather followers and one day, you won’t even need Linda.

Ok. Let’s go hardcore. Just in case you get bored and want a little action. Not the real deal- no hunger strikes and crap like that; just something sufficiently wild that you can boast of. Let’s get arrested.  Don’t panic. It’s not that bad. Just be in the right company so that it gets in the news. Then brag about it for the next many years. Tell people who doubt your activist credentials that you spent so and so period in jail with so and so and that they don’t know the half of it.

Name the cells you have slept in and how awful they smell so that your accusers will bend their heads in shame and curse the day the thought came up in their minds to challenge you. Prison or police-cell time boosts your activist CV. It sells you. Before you know it, you will be spending more time in London and America than you could have ever dreamed of, holding meetings with NGOs trying to help suffering black people.

Be prominent in a protest. You don’t need to start the protest. That is plenty work. All you need is to be in front where the cameras are. The videos and photos of you frothing at the lips raining curses on the government won’t say who started the protest or why. Even though you have houses in your home state, in pretty Abuja or Lagos, and in London, you speak for the masses.

Wear a lousy t-shirt to prove it. The masses will be grateful and will speak about your goodness on radio, on TV and on Twitter.

There are landmines though.

Say your activism gets noticed, and you start feeling like the best thing since nkwobi. You start getting invitations from the Presidency to represent and speak on behalf of groups you know nothing about. Then they stab you by leaking information of the transport fare they provided (which you totally deserve by the way). It could be a mere fifty thousand, an amount you spend on recharge cards and shawarma in a month. But when it hits Twitter, it will look like a huge bribe delivered in Ghana-must-go bags. Then people will hate you, with the same fervour with which they loved you.

Another landmine, closely related to this, is that you begin to have government contacts. You will become friendly with so many people in government that when the time comes for a real event, say a protest you could have exploited, you are already too entangled with these people to join in insulting them. So you offer half witted statements on Twitter or disappear from Twitter altogether. And people WILL notice! Lesson: don’t play god or get greedy.

So, there you have it. I wish you a long and fulfilling career as a Nigerian activist.

BIANCA'S TRIBUTE TO OJUKWU

Read Bianca's Tribute to her late Husband, touching!!! She Truly Loved the Man.

How do I sum up 23 years in one page? I don’t know. How do I describe you? I cannot. Not in any depth. Not for anybody else – you were my husband, my brother, my friend, my child. I was your queen, and it was an honour to have served you.
You were the lion of my history books, the leader of my nation when we faced extinction, the larger-than-life history come to,  my life – living, breathing legend. But unlike the history books, you defied all preconceptions. You made me cry from laughter with your jokes, many irreverent. You awed me with your wisdom. You melted my heart with your kindness. Your impeccable manners made Prince Charming a living reality. Your fearlessness made you the man I dreamt of all my life and your total lack of seeking public approval before speaking your mind separated you from mere mortals.
Every year that I spent with you was an adventure – no two days were the same. With you, I was finally able to soar on wings wider than the ocean. With you I was blessed with the best children God in heaven had to give. With you, I learnt to face the world without fear and learnt daily the things that matter most. Your disdain for money was novel – sometimes funny, other times quite alarming. It mattered not a whit to you. Your total dedication to your people – Ndi-Igbo – was so absolute that really, very little else mattered. You never craved anybody’s praise as long as you believed that you were doing right and even in the face of utmost danger, you never relented from speaking truth to power – to you, what after all, was power? It was not that conferred by the gun, nor that stolen from the ballot box. No. You understood that power transcended all that. Power is the freedom to be true to yourself and to God, no matter the cost.
It is freedom from fear. It is freedom from bondage. It is freedom to seek the wellbeing of your people just because you love them. It is the ability to move a whole nation without a penny as inducement nor a gun to force them. When an entire nation can rise up for one person for no other reason than that they love him and know he is their leader – sans gun, money, official title or any strange paraphernalia – that is power.
To try to contain you in words is futile. You span the breadth of human experience – full of laughter, joy, kindness and sometimes, almost childlike in your ability to find something good in almost everyone and every situation. You could flare up at any injustice and in the next instant, sing military songs to the children. You could analyse a situation with incredible swiftness and accuracy. In any generation, there can only be one like you. You were that one star. You were a child of destiny, born for no other time than the one you found yourself in. Destined to lead your people at the time total extinction was staring us in the face. There was no one else. You gained nothing from it. You used all the resources you had just to wage a war of survival. You fought to keep us alive when we were being slaughtered like rams for no reason. Today, we find ourselves in the same situation but you are not here. You fought that we might live. The truth is finally coming out and even those who fought you now acknowledge that you had no choice. For your faithfulness, God kept you and brought you home to your people.
You loved Nigeria. You spent so much of your waking moments devising ways through which Nigeria could progress to Tai-Two!!! You were the eternal optimist, always hoping that one day, God will touch His people and give us one Vision and the diligence to work towards the dream. It never came to pass in your lifetime. Instead, the disaster you predicted if we continued on the same path has come home to roost. You always saw so clearly. Your words are indelibly preserved for this generation to read and learn and perhaps heed and turn. You always said the dry bones will rise again. But you always hoped we would not become the dry bones by our actions. Above all, you feared for your own people, crying out against the relentless oppression that has not ceased since the end of the war and saddened by the acceptance of this position by your own people. In death, you have awakened the spirit that we thought had died. Your people are finally waking up.
At home, you were the father any child would dream of having. At no point did our children have to wonder where you were. You were ever at their disposal, playing with them, teaching them of a bygone era, teaching them of the world they live in and giving them the total security of knowing you were always present.
In mercy, God gave me a year to prepare for the inevitable. I could never have survived an instant departure. In mercy, God ensured that your final week on earth was spent only with me and that on your last day, you were back to your old self. I cannot but thank God for the joy of that final day – the jokes, the laughter, the songs. It was a lifetime packed into a few hours, filled with hope that many tomorrows would follow and that we would be home for Christmas. You deceived me. You were so emphatic that we would be going home. I did not know you meant a different home. The swiftness of your departure remains shocking to me. You left on the day I least expected. But I cannot fight God. He owns your life and mine. I know that God called you home because every other time it seemed you were at death’s door, you fought like the lion that God made you and always prevailed. In my eyes, even death was no match for you. But who can say ‘no’ to the Almighty God? You walked away with Him, going away with such peace that I can only bow to God’s sovereignty. Your people have remembered. The warrior of our land has gone. The flags are lowered in your honour. Our hearts are laden with grief.
But I will trust that the living God who gave you to me will look after me and our children. Through my sadness, the memories will always shine bright and beautiful. Adieu, my love, my husband, my lion, Ikemba, Amuma na Egbe Igwe, Odenigbo Ngwo. Eze-Igbo Gburugburu, Ibu dike. Chukwu gozie gi, Chukwu debe gi. Anyi ga afu na omesia.
