DELTA STATE FORMER GOVERNOR, CHEIF JAMES IBORI SENTENCED TO 13 YEARS IMPRISONMENT.
Chief James Ibori was sentenced today by a UK Court to 13 years imprisonment. The Judge however reduced the 645 days he has spent in custody since his trial began leaving Ibori with a 7year jail term in UK custody.
While handing Ibori his sentence when the court resumed, Judge Pitts said his assets would be confiscated as part of the process.
He said Ibori committed serious crimes and ought to have been given the maximum punishment.
Ibori had a few weeks ago sensationally pleaded guilty to 10 select charges bordering on money laundering and fraud, thereby bringing a much anticipated lengthy legal battle to an abrupt end.
However famous former international soccer star, John Fashanu, who mounted the witness stand and gave a glowing testimony in support of Ibori’s person, character and achievements as governor of Delta State. He said Ibori’s rule impacted positively on youths in the state adding that the former Governor constructed several stadiums to encourage youth development. This Submission swayed the Judge who had already written a maximun sentence to reduce to 13 years.
Ibori's Sentence starts counting immediately, He has been taken to jail.
